Gentle bodywork with time and space for the body to respond
Bowen Therapy has been part of my clinical work since 2001.
It is a gentle, hands-on form of bodywork using precise movements followed by pauses, giving time to notice and respond to what is happening in the body.
I offer Bowen Therapy in person in St Bees, Cumbria.
What happens in Bowen Therapy?
Bowen involves a series of light, deliberate movements at particular areas of the body, interspersed with periods of rest.
The treatment is not forceful. There is no deep manipulation or aggressive stretching.
You remain clothed during treatment, so loose, comfortable clothing is recommended.
Before we begin, I will ask about relevant health history, injuries, surgery, medication, current symptoms and anything requiring particular care.
During the session, I pay attention to how your body is presenting and responding rather than following exactly the same sequence for everyone.
Why might someone come for Bowen?
People may come to me with physical experiences such as:
- muscular tension
- back, neck or shoulder discomfort
- joint discomfort
- sports or overuse problems
- postural strain
- physical tension associated with stress
- patterns of bracing or holding
- general physical discomfort or restriction
You do not need to know exactly what is causing the problem before coming.
Where symptoms require medical investigation or treatment, I will encourage you to seek appropriate medical care.
My Approach
I do not treat Bowen as a technique to be applied in exactly the same way to everyone.
I pay attention to the person as well as the physical presentation.
Sometimes hands-on work may be useful.
Sometimes something else requires attention.
And sometimes the appropriate response is to leave something alone rather than trying to change it.
The starting point remains:
What most requires attention now?

Professional Background
I qualified in Bowen Therapy in 2001 and have undertaken further advanced Bowen training, including SBP1 and SBP2.
Bowen has been part of my therapeutic practice for more than two decades and continues to inform the way I attend to the body, even as much of my practice moves online.
I am a member of the Bowen Association UK (BAUK).
Important Note
Bowen Therapy is complementary and is not a substitute for medical diagnosis, emergency care or prescribed medical treatment.
I do not diagnose medical conditions or advise you to stop or change prescribed medication.
