Bowen Therapy

Bowen Therapy is a gentle, hands-on treatment that uses small, precise moves over muscles, fascia and connective tissue to encourage the body to reset and reorganise.

It is not forceful or invasive. The pauses between the moves are an important part of the treatment, giving the body time to respond in its own way.

What Bowen may help with

People come for Bowen Therapy for many different reasons, including:

  • back, neck and shoulder pain
  • muscular tension and postural strain
  • stress and nervous system overload
  • fatigue and general wear and tear
  • recovery after injury
  • jaw tension and holding patterns
  • digestive or stress-related physical symptoms
  • support during times of change, pressure or depletion, e.g menopause, pregnancy etc.
  • babies with colic, glue ear, birth trauma.

I do not treat symptoms in a mechanical way. I work with the person as a whole, while paying attention to what the body seems to be asking for.

What a session is like

A Bowen session is usually calm and quiet. The treatment is performed through light clothing in most cases.

I use gentle rolling moves at specific points on the body, with pauses in between. During those pauses I may step out of the room for a short time, allowing the body space to respond without interference.

People often describe the experience as settling, unwinding or deeply restful. Sometimes the response is immediate; sometimes it unfolds over the following days.

A gentle approach

Bowen Therapy is suitable for many people because it is so gentle, from babies to the elderly.

It can often be used when stronger or more forceful approaches are not wanted or not appropriate.
